Low-voltage LED, all of it. Against halogen that works out to roughly 80 percent less energy, about ten times the service life, a cooler-running fixture and a warmer, more natural light. Put twenty of them in a yard and the whole system draws about what one incandescent porch bulb draws. The fixtures are rated 40,000 to 50,000 hours, which is past a decade at eight hours a night. Housings are commercial-grade brass and cast aluminum, so the finish holds up outside.
Very. A transformer drops household power down to 12 volts before it reaches anything out in the yard, so under normal conditions there is no shock risk. That is why these fixtures can sit in mulch beds, beside water features and in soil that stays wet. A 120-volt system does not offer the same margin, which is one reason every landscape system we install is low-voltage.
Buried. Primary runs go in at least six inches down, below anything a mower blade or an aerator will reach, and the short leads at each fixture disappear under mulch or groundcover. Where a run crosses a sidewalk or a driveway it gets routed underneath rather than over the top. The transformer sits somewhere tidy near the garage or an exterior wall. Nothing exposed, nothing to trip over.
We default to 2700K warm white. It flatters brick, stone, siding and green planting instead of washing everything out. If you want something slightly crisper, 3000K is available. We stay away from the 4000K range and up, because cool white makes a house look harsh and clinical once the sun is down.
Call us. Fixtures come with a manufacturer warranty, most of them in the 10 to 15 year range, and our installation workmanship is warrantied for three years. There is no debate about whose problem it is. Past that, these systems ask for very little. Aiming is the reason we come back most often, because shrubs and trees grow and a light placed perfectly in year one can want a nudge by year three.
The ground decides that one. As long as the soil is not frozen solid we can trench and install. During a hard freeze the digging may pause, though fixtures and wire can often be staged so the system finishes fast once things soften. Most systems go in over one to three days on site. Dates get locked once the written quote is approved.
